Episode 2.11 transcript - “IS IT DONE?”

ADAM RAYMONDA: Windfall is intended for a mature audiences, see our show notes for more information. Listener discretion is advised.

[SFX: A lone set of feet running. Coughing.]

[SFX: Root finds a comm device and taps at the keypad. Crackling static.]

ROOT: Hello?! Is this line active? Hello? It is I! Commander Root! I have escaped!

[SFX: More crackling and then a voice.]

COMMAND CENTER: Hello?

ROOT: Oh praise be! Put your commanding officer on the line, we need to talk!

[SFX: Windfall theme music plays.]

[SFX: Three sets of footsteps, one is running.]

HELINA: The burning smell is worse this way! Fuck fuck fuck...

WILLEM: Helina, wait for us, we don't know what's back here!

[SFX: Up ahead we hear Helina's gasp or scream of distress, Willem and Wanda begin to run. The footsteps stop and there's a long beat of silence.]

WANDA: Oh my goodness...

HELINA: Why? Why would someone do this? This is everything for the season.

[SFX: Helina weeps bitterly.]

WANDA: Perhaps I can-

HELINA: -Don't fucking touch anything!

WILLEM: Helina, come on, she's just trying to-

WANDA: -it's okay. Let's give her space.

[SFX: Crunching footsteps as Willem and Wanda investigate.]

WILLEM: They've destroyed everything... Why? Why would someone do this?

WANDA: I don't have an answer for-

WILLEM: -Oh no no no no no- Queen- stop don't come any further-

[SFX: She keeps moving and then lets out a strangled gasp.]

WANDA: (whispered) Benny.

HELINA: What?

WILLEM: (choking on tears) It's Benny, we've... found him.

[SFX: Helina comes rushing over and gags/gasps.]

HELINA: (in shock) What happened here?

WANDA: (tearful) Oh no. We had a very strange conversation yesterday, that I think may be at the root of this, he-

[SFX: An intercom crackle/blast interrupts the dialogue.]

CAS: (os) Willem or Helina! We need one of you! We're back and Shaima's hurt!

WANDA: Go.

WILLEM: I can't leave you both right now with Benny and all of this...

WANDA: There's nothing you can do here, it's too late...

[SFX: Wanda breaks into tears.]

HELINA: (through tears) She's right. Go. I... I can't right now-

WILLEM: Okay.

WILLEM: (Into the comm) I'm on my way.

CAS: (OS) Please hurry.

[SFX: Willem races out.]

WANDA: (Sniffling) Perhaps we should cover him, say some words? Would you help find something?

HELINA: (a long pause) Yeah. Okay.

[SFX: Somber music takes us out of the scene.]

[SFX: Kendall guides Isaac through the chaos of the main hall.]

ISAAC: (laughing) Bet you never thought you'd have to see me again, did'ya Kendall?

KENDALL: Never thought I'd be back on ground level. Period.

ISAAC: (pauses to look around) Looks like we're below even that now... where are you taking me? I need to make sure Argus is okay.

KENDALL: He's with his family. He'll be fine.

ISAAC: You don't get it, we've been there for one another. The humans... they fucked us up. He needs to be around someone who understands.

[SFX: The chatter of the crowd dissipates.]

KENDALL: Pav!

PAV: Kendall! I'm so happy to see you, something horrible happened while you were gone-

[SFX: Pav stops abruptly and has to catch her breath.]

KENDALL: ...What is it?

ISAAC: (lets out a genuine belly laugh) Well, hello, daughter.

PAV: (quietly) Dad...

KENDALL: Umm... what?

ISAAC: Just when I thought nothing else could possibly surprise me... here I am, face-to-face with two people I loved who stabbed me in the back. (laughs) This is delightful. And how do you two know each other now?

PAV: Kendall, I can explain-

KENDALL: Hang on- I'm still reeling from the fact that you just called him Dad. What the fuck?

ISAAC: Oh, I'm sorry, did you not know who Pavlima is? This might get a little awkward. She's my first-born…The daughter I raised to take over the family business, only she left me behind for a contract with the Wolves. Abandoned her family. Abandoned me.

PAV:  I inherited your legacy, father. I did what I needed to do to protect myself. Isn't that what you taught me?

KENDALL: Wait, does this mean Mila is your-

PAV: Half-sister.

ISAAC: Never really got along, those two.

PAV: Kendall, I kept meaning to tell you... I was waiting for the right time, but I just-

KENDALL: Just what?

PAV: I was afraid.

KENDALL: Afraid of what? I'm the one who turned your father into the Wolves. Fuck, Pav! Why didn't you say something?

ISAAC: Feeling ashamed of your past, dear?

PAV: He was- You weren't a good person, Dad!

ISAAC: Looks like we all have a lot to talk about...

KENDALL: Shut it.

[SFX: Kendall drags Isaac past Pav.]

PAV: Where're you taking him?

KENDALL: Down to the grain storage room.

ISAAC: Don't worry, Pavlima. We'll have plenty of time to chat!

[SFX: Kendall and Isaac disappear into the crowd. We stay with Pav.]

PAV: Shit.

[SFX: Shaima and Argus are on two separate beds in the clinic, resting. There's a din of medical machines. Cas and Gert are between them, speaking quietly.]

GERT: You're gonna need to explain that to me one more time.

CAS: I'm having a hard time understanding too, Gertie. (deep breath) Kendall and I split off from Viv and Shaima, to cover more ground. Things were quiet. Too quiet. And then, suddenly, we heard a gunshot. We ran as fast as we could, toward it. And in that time, I couldn't stop thinking, what happened to my little brother? Only... it wasn't him I should've been worried about.

GERT: (stifling a sob) Shaima… You know, I told him that you and the girls could handle it.

CAS: This was too important to him. He wanted to see it through himself.

GERT: I just wish I'd tried harder to stop him...

CAS: He's here. They both are. And breathing. Thank Wanda for that.

GERT: Screw Wanda, thank you Cas. You brought them both back to me.

CAS: I'm not the only one you should thank. Isaac...

GERT: I still don't understand why you brought him here. I know you have a history, but after all Mila's done...

CAS: It's what Argus wanted.

ARGUS: (rustling) He's a good man.

GERT: (hugging and kissing him) Oh my beautiful baby boy. You have no idea how happy I am to see you.

ARGUS: I never stopped trying to get back here, Gert. Not once.

GERT: I know that, Argus. I know.

CAS: (standing, smiling) You better watch out there, little brother. You may've gotten strong, but I could still take you.

ARGUS: Glad to see you haven't changed.

[SFX: They embrace, holding on tight. Cas fakes a laugh, fighting back tears.]

GERT: Take all the time you need, but when you're ready, please tell us everything. Where you've been... what they did to you...

CAS: How you connected with my old boss.

ARGUS: In time, I promise you… I meant what I said, you know. I may not know everything he's done, but I wouldn't be here without him.

GERT: (resigned) I'll be sure to thank him for that.

ARGUS: (serious) How's Shaima?

CAS: Don't worry about it, we've got people who can take care of him.

[SFX: The door opens and Willem comes rushing in.]

GERT: Speak of the devil, here's one of 'em.

WILLEM: Shaima! What the hell happened?

CAS: It's a long story.

WILLEM: Who did this? And when?

ARGUS: (heartbroken, quiet) I did.

WILLEM: (confused) Argus... it's good to see you.

GERT: Willem, we can get into the details later. Right now, I'm gonna need you to save my nephew.

WILLEM: I promise, I'll do everything I can for him. But I'm gonna need an extra set of hands, Gert.

GERT: What about Helina?

WILLEM: She's in the greenhouse... It's bad. Benny's gone, and all of her hard work... it's destroyed.

ARGUS: What do you mean Benny's gone?

GERT: What the hell happened to him?

WILLEM: (distant) I have no idea... we found the greenhouse in flames with Benny dead on the floor. It was awful...

ARGUS: Did the fire kill him?

WILLEM: There wasn't enough time to be positive, but I think he'd been shot.

GERT: Rest his soul.

CAS: (seething) Mila. I'll kill her. I can't let her take away anyone else I love.

GERT: You should go be with Helina.

CAS: Will you be alright without me?

GERT: We'll be fine. Just go.

CAS: It's good to have you back, Argus. We all missed you so much.

ARGUS: I missed you too, Cas. And I'm so sorry... I never meant for this to happen.

CAS: Not another word. He's gonna be fine.

[SFX: Cas exits the room. Willem begins rolling over a cart with medical tools. Somber music takes us out of the scene.]

[SFX: Helina sifts through the wreckage, picking up broken pieces of plant beds and throwing them onto the ground again. Wanda quietly puts them into a pile.]

CAS: Would you mind giving us some privacy, Wanda?

WANDA: (getting up to leave) No. Not at all. Be my guest.

[SFX: Wanda leaves the room and cas walks closer to helina.

HELINA: (deep breath) Fuck, Cas. What the fuck are we gonna do?

CAS: (approaching) It could be worse, right?

HELINA: How on Proxima do you figure that?

CAS: Things could've gone way more south than they did. Argus' back in one piece, and… (clearing his throat) Well, most of our people are alive.

HELINA: Benny...

CAS: I know.

HELINA: Look, I know I didn't love the guy, but... nobody deserved to go out like that, so brutal and unforgiving… (her voice breaking) He's still in here... I didn't know what else to do with him.

CAS: Don't worry, I'll take care of it. You've been through enough today.

HELINA: Thank you.

CAS: You know, I can't believe I'm saying this but: I'm gonna miss him. He could be a piece of shit, sure, but he had a big heart, and he really proved himself around here, these past few weeks. I don't know how we're gonna rebuild with him gone and Shaima down for the count, but I'm sure we'll manage. We'll have to.

HELINA: For how much longer though, Cas? You and Kendall do great work, but without any kind of self-sustaining infrastructure, we're dead in the water.

CAS: You were able to do it once. Who's to say that you couldn't again?

HELINA: I didn't do all this by myself. Your brother...

CAS: Shaima's gonna be fine.

HELINA: I'm sorry I didn't help, but...

CAS: Say no more.

[SFX: Cas pulls Helina in for a hug and kisses her cheek.]

CAS: I know it feels like this is the end of our world, but I promise...

HELINA: Cas.

CAS: (pacing) It'll be good as new, soon. Better, even. Just wait, I'll do whatever it takes. Whatever you need, I'll get it.

HELINA: Cas. Stop for a second. Listen to me.

[SFX: Cas stops pacing. He listens, silently. A melancholy, romantic score comes in.]

HELINA: We're not gonna rebuild it.

CAS: What do you mean? Of course, we are.

HELINA: There's no point. This city isn't safe for people like us. It hasn't been in a long time, but now it's clear to me that it's worse than ever before.

CAS: That isn't true. Some bad people got their hands on the wheel, that's all. But if we keep building, we'll be able to take them down and to take it all back. Turn it into something new.

HELINA: You're not listening to me. Even if you somehow pull that off. You're gonna have to do it without me. I'm going back to the Reaches.

CAS: No, but what about...

HELINA: Windfall isn't my home, Cas. It never has been. For a little while, sure, I maybe tricked myself into thinking I could be happy here. I found you, and Gert, and your incredible family but-

CAS: What?

HELINA: It isn't enough. Don't you see? After everything we did to fortify this place, Mila was able to come in and reduce it to ashes at the snap of a finger. What's to stop her from finishing the job? Worse yet, what's to stop her from sending the humans in after us? Sending us all to those despicable work camps. I refuse to be caged like an animal.

CAS: I wouldn't ever let them do that. I'm telling you, we're gonna fight them. And we're gonna win.

HELINA: I hope you do. I mean that. But I won't be here to find out.

CAS: Please... Helina. I'm begging you to stay. I love you.

HELINA: I love you too, Cas… You know, you could come with me...

CAS: (obviously pained) My family... I couldn't leave them.

HELINA: So don't. Help me convince them that leaving it all behind is how we move beyond this. How we grow.

CAS: I'm sorry. I know it must sound insane, but I can't give up on this city. It's all I've ever known... I'm not ready to leave it behind.

[SFX: Cas begins to break down.]

HELINA: Shh, it's alright. Everything's gonna be okay...

CAS: Is it?

HELINA: I don't have any fucking clue…. Come here.

[SFX: They embrace a final time and kiss. Sad, but hopeful music takes us out of the scene.]

[SFX: Doors swoosh open.]

TIMMS: Everyone, leave me and the doctor.

[SFX: The sound of feet leaving the room and the door swooshing closed.]

JACOB: You look better. You slept.

TIMMS: Yes, finally. It put a few things in perspective for me.

JACOB: Oh really?

TIMMS: Jacob, you are my oldest friend on this ship, in life at this point, and I love you, but I feel as if we have been working on separate teams since we arrived here-

JACOB: -I can't in good conscience follow your ever order-

TIMMS: But you must, that is our contract. You have been working against me, our agenda, questioning me. I can't have that.

JACOB: Max-

TIMMS: I'm aware that I haven't been at my best lately, but as one of my highest ranking officers it is now more important than ever that we present a united front, for the good of this mission, for the good of morale.

JACOB: So what're you saying?

TIMMS: I'm saying, that we're perilously close to losing control, and that I won't hesitate to reassert it.

JACOB: You're asking me if my Hippocratic oath will supersede my loyalty to the mission?

TIMMS: I'm telling you it already has.

JACOB: So what now?

TIMMS: It's your choice, but from this point on, please understand that there must be consequences for insubordination, regardless of where or who it comes from, for the sake of our people.

JACOB: How can you be so certain that what you choose is the right course of action? Max, with respect, you've made many missteps since we've been here.

TIMMS: I cannot fix the past, but I can fix this- this perceived lack of control. I can tighten my hold on this castle, my forces, and I shall. No good can come from being undermined. Do you understand what I am telling you?

JACOB: I do.

TIMMS: Good, because it will be the last warning you receive. Goodnight Doctor.

JACOB: Goodnight Admiral Timms.

[SFX: The doors swoosh as Timms exits the lab.]

[SFX: Soft, barely perceptible snoring from Argus. Pav and Gert talk in hushed tones.]

PAV: Everyone's devastated by the loss. I've never seen morale so low...

GERT: We'll rebuild, Pav. They'll see.

PAV: I honestly don't know, Gert. With Shaima injured, Helina leaving, and the garden gone, we won't have the resources to start all over again.

GERT: What do you mean Helina's leaving? Where's she going?

PAV: The Reaches. And she's offering to take whoever wants to go with her.

GERT: Who's going?

PAV: So far just her and Leboof's people.

GERT: Don't tell me you've considered it. The humans will still come for you there!

PAV: At least there would be more time!

GERT: I won't give up on this city.

PAV: And I'm not asking you to! But we can't make anyone stay.

GERT: Helina hasn't been back there in years. She has no idea what she's even walking into...

PAV: They're willing to take their chances.

GERT: They're giving up!

PAV: Without them we can focus on what matters most: fighting back.

GERT: (It's dawning on her) Of course! You know what, Pav, you're right. This whole time we've been so caught up in keeping everyone alive. We stopped doing what we were meant to do… Oh... oh! That's it!

PAV: What?

GERT: The Reaches!

PAV: I don't understand.

GERT: Helina's right, They're our last hope, but not how she means it.

PAV: Okay...

GERT: The Reachers, they're not all docile healers and farmers. They're warriors. I've seen what they can do.

PAV: But they couldn't fight off the Queen's invasion anymore than we could.

GERT: They were caught off guard in the attack. But what if we were the ones to catch the humans off guard?

PAV: You really think they're capable?

GERT: I know it. The trick is convincing them it needs to be done. They don't like to leave the mountains…. But if the right person were to go with the caravan and convince them...

PAV: (sarcastic) I sincerely doubt Leboof would be able to win over a warrior tribe.

GERT: Of course not. And I can't go either. There's too much to do. I love my boys, but let's face it, they couldn't pull off a rebellion without me.

PAV: But it has to be you. They know you.

GERT: If I were to send someone with a signed letter to the Temple of Wise Women they might just listen. But it'd have to be the right person...

PAV: Okay...

GERT: Someone who's proven time and again that she has an unparalleled ability to bring people together...

PAV: Absolutely.

GERT: ...To remain calm under pressure...

PAV: Yes, unquestionably important.

GERT: ...a natural-born diplomat.

PAV: Hmmm...

GERT: I can only think of one person.

PAV: (excited) Who?

GERT: You.

PAV: (taken aback) No. Not me.

GERT: You're the only person I know who could sway them. You'll carry my message and secure their aid.

PAV: I can't.

GERT: You can! You must convince them that, if they don't join us, the whole planet'll be overrun soon enough. If Windfall falls, they won't be far behind.

PAV: But, Kendall...

GERT: Kendall has work to do. And so do you.

PAV: (emotional) I can't leave her. What if something happens?

GERT: If you don't, something bad will. Don't you see? We can't win this alone… You're the one always asking to help, never wanting to be left behind.

PAV: I did say that.

GERT: I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important.

PAV: (in tears) Never, did I ever believe that I'd care about anyone or anything more than myself.

GERT: Love makes us do crazy things, Pavlima. You know that.

PAV: I don't want to let you down.

GERT: You won't. I have faith in you.

ARGUS: (sitting up in bed) I'm going, too.

GERT: Nonsense. You belong right here. With your family.

ARGUS: No, Gert. The humans... I was their prisoner. I know what they're capable of. A letter alone won't be enough to convince them, but I might.

[SFX: Argus stands shakily and gives gert a hug.]

ARGUS: (gently) It might surprise you, but I've grown up a lot since the last time you saw me. I know what I need to do.

GERT: (emotional) We just got you back. After all this time... but you're right. (openly crying) Oh...I'm gonna miss you both. I don't know how I'll stay sane without you.

PAV: You're the strongest person I know.

ARGUS: I love you, Gertie.

[SFX: Somber music ends the scene.]

[SFX: There's a knock at the door, Swift clears his throat and buzzes a button under his desk. it opens and Cade enters.]

SWIFT: Come to see what I've done with the place?

CADE: Oh, no, I could have guessed at that myself. It's all rather predictable and tacky.

[SFX: Cade paces the room, picking things up and putting them back down.]

SWIFT: Can I help you with something then?

CADE: I'm just curious if you know where Argus and Isaac are. Or why there's a trail of blood leaving their room...

SWIFT: I had nothing to do with that. The Wolves showed up and knocked me out. When I came to, they were already gone.

CADE: I heard you feed that line to Mila too. But we aren't buying it.

SWIFT: I'm telling you that's what happened.

CADE: Here's the thing, I don't actually care what you have to say.

SWIFT: (panicked) I'm serious, a bunch of Wolves showed up-

CADE: There's nothing you can say to stop the inevitable, Swift, because the truth is I've been waiting for this moment since the day you showed up.

SWIFT: Cade, listen to me, I don't know what-

CADE: You've tried your best to replace me.

SWIFT: Mila and I have grown close, but that doesn't mean-

CADE: Actually, Mila and I are on the same page about you.

SWIFT: What do you--

CADE: You can't be trusted, and now that you've lost Isaac and the boy... well, you've outlived your usefulness to us.

SWIFT: Wait, Cade, please think about--

CADE: Let me use a metaphor you might understand... you played your best hand, and it was a good one, but you made the fatal mistake of underestimating your opponent.

SWIFT: I would never do anything-

[SFX: Cade unholsters her weapon and unloads it into swift. After his body collapses, she puts it back in her belt, takes out a communicator, and dials.]

MILA: Well?

CADE: It's done.

MILA: I'm looking at the security footage now. He let Isaac run off with Kendall and Cas.

CADE: Good riddance.

MILA: My father has thrown his lot in with Gert and the boys. No matter. We got what we needed. The mission was a success, all thanks to you, Cade.

CADE: The humans are about to find out exactly who they're dealing with.

[SFX: The communicator cuts. ominous music ends the episode.
