Episode 2.10 transcript - “burn the rest”

[SFX: Cas hands out masks to Shaima, Kendall and Vivienne.]

CAS: Okay, first things first, everyone wears a helmet for the entire mission. I don't want anyone getting a look at our faces.

VIVIENNE: (examining her helmet) Is this supposed to be a Wolfpac helmet?

CAS: Obviously, they're not the real thing. Benny made these with old communicator parts and got the voice modulation almost right. As long as our hoods are up, we should be able to move freely.

KENDALL: It's not ideal, but the robes at least are spot on.

SHAIMA: I don't love the idea of having to wear these, if I'm being honest.

KENDALL: Think of it as a necessary evil.

SHAIMA: If you say so. I still don't understand why Mila would let a group of Wolves enter, no questions asked.

VIVIENNE: That's where I come in. Mila's working with the humans, who're now in charge of the Wolfpac. From what I gathered, Argus was released into Mila's care along with another inmate. However, before that happened, his numbers were logged into the hospital system.

SHAIMA: What does that mean?

KENDALL: We don't know.

VIVIENNE: As far as Mila's concerned, we've been tasked with collecting Argus and bringing him in for a follow-up. If she puts up a fight, we'll tell her it's a non-negotiable part of his release.

CAS: Do you think she'll buy it?

VIVIENNE: As long as everyone lets me do the talking.

KENDALL: But just in case...

[SFX: Kendall unlocks a vault in the room and swings open the rusty door.]

VIVIENNE: (suddenly enamored) Shiny!

CAS: Ladies first...

[SFX: Kendall pulls a gun out for herself first. Vivienne goes next, but before she can pick one out, Shaima stops her.]

SHAIMA: Wait a minute...

CAS: We all need to be armed, Shaim.

SHAIMA: I know, but-

VIVIENNE: But what?

KENDALL: This plan'll never work if we don't trust each other.

CAS: If it wasn't for Viv we wouldn't even know that Argus is alive and well.

SHAIMA: That still remains to be seen.

CAS: We don't have time for this.

VIVIENNE: Yeah, I get it, you don't trust me.

[SFX: Vivienne grabs a gun and cocks it.]

VIVIENNE: I still get a gun.

SHAIMA: Fine, but I'm watching you.

VIVIENNE: Sounds hot.

[SFX: Shaima ignores her, while cas tosses him a gun.]

KENDALL: Come on, everyone suit up. Let's get this over with.

[SFX: Guns are loaded, helmets powered on, and robes adjusted.]

[SFX: Many sets of footsteps walk through the water and stop just outside of a gate. Benny whistles nervously.]

BENNY: An awful lot of men you got there just to pull a couple weeds, huh Cade?

CADE: I like to come prepared, Benny.

BENNY: (suspiciously) Can't say I expected anything less.

[SFX: We hear the clang of the gate opening.]

MILA: Benny, I really thought I'd seen the last of you, but here you are.

BENNY: Mila… Running with some new faces I see... who's this?

MILA: My mother, you-

LUZ: Name's Luz.

BENNY: It's a pleasure, ma'am.

MILA: All right, that's enough of that. Let's get to work-

BENNY: Not so fast. I have charges set on the far side of the compound to give your team the time and the privacy to take what you need undetected. None of your people sets foot on the living quarters. I'll need your assurance that no-one gets hurt.

MILA: That's no fun. I think I might just take a look around first. I've heard rumors about all kinds of fun things Vernon left behind-

BENNY: You have no right to say his name!

MILA: Relax. Geez, everyone's so touchy about that… Take anything that's not nailed down. Dispose of anyone who gets in the way.

BENNY: Please Mila, take what you need from the garden and go, like we agreed.

MILA: The plan has changed.

LUZ: Oh sweetie, I feel like you should've seen this one coming, she's always bit the hand, or in my case, tit that fed her, the teeth on this one, born with a full set... fucking unnerving-

MILA: -Wanda dammit- Mom.

BENNY: Please, don't do this Mila.

MILA: Oh sweet Benny, you can't truly have thought I'd come and go so easily?

BENNY: I didn't, I just hoped it wouldn't come to this.

[SFX: A click, and then two explosions at close range. coughing and yelling, rubble falling.]

MILA: What the fuck did you do?!

BENNY: The only two entrances to the living quarters are now blocked. Take what you need and get the fuck out.

LUZ: (laughing) That's fantastic. I guess plans change honey, I did hear that was wont to happen.

[SFX: Mila grabs Luz by the tentacle and yanks, Luz yelps.]

BENNY: Wanda... take it easy on her, Mila.

MILA: Shut the fuck up, Benny. Show me where the garden is, and no more tricks.

BENNY: Sadly, that was my last one.

[SFX: Multiple guns cock and train themselves on Benny.]

[SFX: Anxious music plays as the grounders approach the compound. It is eerily quiet for them. Vivienne slams her fist against the front door and says in her affected voice.]

VIVIENNE: Warehouse 298, please open your doors.

[SFX: There's a beat of silence. vivienne knocks again.]

VIVIENNE: Warehouse 298, we're here for Inmate 143. This is a routine follow-up for his medical examinations. Part of the deal when he was released to your care. Now, please open your doors.

[SFX: A heavy metal door opens.]

HENCHMAN #1: No one said anything about routine examinations. Who are you?

VIVIENNE: Wolfpac, what's it look like? Now do you want me to report that you denied our entry? That'll reflect very poorly on your boss, I can promise you that.

HENCHMAN #1: No, we just haven't been told-

VIVIENNE: We'll be in and out. Now open up.

HENCHMAN #1: …All right, all right. But make it snappy.

VIVIENNE: Just here to do our jobs.

HENCHMAN #1: Do you need an... escort?

VIVIENNE: We'll take it from here.

[SFX: The four walk down an echoey hallway with authority, but as soon as they're out of eyesight their gait relaxes.]

CAS: That was too easy...

SHAIMA: We got lucky.

CAS: I guess.

SHAIMA: Let's split up to cover more ground.

VIVIENNE: Kendall and I will take one floor up-

SHAIMA: I don't think so. I'm going wherever you go.

VIVIENNE: Shaima, really, I'm flattered, but I think we're a little busy right now-

SHAIMA: (flustered) I don't want you out of my sight!

VIVIENNE: 

Again, so cute.

KENDALL: 

Knock it off you two. Seriously. Take the next floor up, Cas and I will cover this one. Radio if anything happens.

SHAIMA: 

Got it. Be careful.

[SFX: Vivienne and Shaima open a nearby door and head up an echoey stairway. We stay with Kendall and Cas as they slink down the same hallway.]

CAS: Come on, Kendall. Don't you think it's weird how quiet this place is?

KENDALL: Maybe her men are deserting?

[SFX: They kick open a door. Nothing.]

CAS: No, something isn't right.

KENDALL: It could be our lucky day. We came here to find Argus, remember? We're not leaving without him.

CAS: You're right. Let's go.

[SFX: More doomy sounding music plays out the end of the scene as they continue walking.]

[SFX: A key turns in the lock.]

WANDA: Hello? What's going on out there? We heard some loud booming sounds.

WILLEM: My Queen, both of the exit tunnels have collapsed, we need all hands on deck to make sure no one's trapped- it's urgent, I'm sorry to disturb-

WANDA: -not at all, we'd be happy to assist.

ROOT: (mumbling) Speak for yourself Highness. I'll be happier to remain here in squalid, yet relative safety-

[SFX: The door scrapes open.]

WILLEM: Your Highness, your humble servant.

WANDA: Yes, Willem, of course. Charmed. Goodness… Would you look at that arm of yours? It's just glistening.

WILLEM: Um... thank you? … Please I'm sorry to hurry Your Highness, but we must rush--

WANDA: Yes, yes, of course. Point us toward the accident- we shall make haste-

ROOT: Yes, please, point us in the direction of calamity and disaster with that glistening arm of yours.

WANDA: (embarrassed) Root! Shut up and hurry up!

ROOT: I'm doing it, aren't I?!

[SFX: Wanda, Willem, and Root run off in toward the chaos. Action packed music takes us out of the scene.]

[SFX: The score here is very lighthearted by comparison. Someone shuffles a deck of cards and Swift laughs.]

ARGUS: High hand again!

ISAAC: Wanda dammit!

SWIFT: You're still a cheat, I see. Learned that from your uncle, did ya?

ARGUS: It was just luck.

SWIFT: I'm just saying, that type of "luck" must run in your family.

ISAAC: Knock it off Swift. We're having a good day here.

SWIFT: I'm not. Babysitting you and the invalid isn't my idea of a good time.

ISAAC: (after a beat, serious) Apologize to him.

ARGUS: It's fine, that's what I am.

ISAAC: No it's not fucking fine, and that's not what you are. You've been injured and you're getting better. Apologize.

SWIFT: (insincerely) I'm sorry Argus.

ARGUS: Okay.

SWIFT: I think it's sweet the way you're taking such good care of him, who knew you had such a soft, protective side? Certainly not your kids.

ISAAC: You want to play another hand Argus?

ARGUS: Sure.

SWIFT: It's always nice to get another chance, a do-over as it were.

[SFX: They ignore him as the cards are shuffled.]

SWIFT: Mila for example, ice in her veins, keeping you under lock and key. Bet you wish you could get a do-over on that one don't you?

ARGUS: That's not true, we're not locked in here right?

ISAAC: No Argus, of course not, Swift's just trying to get a rise outta me. We're fine, Mila wouldn't ever hurt us.

SWIFT: I mean, unless you owed her money, or pissed her off...

ISAAC: Shut the fuck up right now Swift.

SWIFT: Thats why she killed your Uncle Vernon. Put a bullet right into his temple, but I guess that's what happens to cheats-

ISAAC: Get the fuck out of here now Swift.

SWIFT: I can't, Mila's orders, I have to stay here until the adults get home.

ARGUS: Is that true!?

SWIFT: About Vernon? Yes, dead as a doornail.

ARGUS: Tell me he's lying, Isaac...

[SFX: A long silence and then Isaac clears his throat.]

ARGUS: Isaac? Say it isn't true.

ISAAC: Kid, uh...

[SFX: Argus angrily flips the table and pounces on Swift, who begins to struggle.]

ARGUS: YOU'RE LYING, YOU PIECE OF SHIT, TELL ME THAT YOU'RE LYING!

SWIFT: (nervous, backpedaling) Relax, kid! It was just a joke!

ISAAC: Do you see what you've done? Help me restrain him, he's gonna hurt himself.

[SFX: Grunting, scrambling as Isaac and Swift try to restrain Argus. the sound of Swift screaming.]

SWIFT: Fuck! He fucking bit me!

ISAAC: Just help me hold him down!

SWIFT: (out of breath, backing away) No, handle it yourself. I'm not getting hit again-

[SFX: As Isaac unsuccessfully tries to hold him back, the door bursts open. Shaima cocks his gun.]

SHAIMA: (voice modulated) I'm gonna need you to step back from the boy and take your hands off of him, now. He's coming with us.

ISAAC: Officer, this isn't what it looks like-

ARGUS: -LET ME GO, ISAAC, I'VE GOT THIS UNDER CONTROL!

VIVIENNE: (approaching from behind, weapon cocked) What the fuck's going on?!

SHAIMA: (shaken) Put your hands in the air, Isaac. I have no problem taking you out.

ISAAC: I don't know who you are officer, but please back up, I'm not gonna hurt him, he just got some bad news that set him off, is all-

SHAIMA: -Take your hands off him, now.

ARGUS: YOU BETRAYED YOUR OWN KIND! ALL OF YOU, TRAITORS-

[SFX: Argus roars and charges Shaima, who cries out.]

ARGUS: -YOU'RE KILLING US! YOUR OWN PEOPLE! YOU KILLED OZ!

ISAAC: ARGUS!

VIVIENNE: Everyone, stay where you are!

SHAIMA: NOBODY TOUCH HIM! I've got him, Argus, please-

ARGUS: GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME, ALL OF YOU! OZ IS DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU!

SHAIMA: Please Argus, stop, it's me, I won't hurt you it's me, I'd never-

[SFX: Argus grunts. A gun shot rings out.]

VIVIENNE: SHAIMA: !

[SFX: Shaima gasps in pain. Argus drops the gun to the floor and begins to hyperventilate. Dark music ends the scene.]

[SFX: Helina is alone, hauling rocks and throwing them behind her. She's over-exerting herself and exhausted, but pushing forward. Willem, Wanda, and Root approach.]

WANDA: Oh dear, don't lift with your back, lift with your legs! You're liable to hurt yourself!

HELINA: (stopping, turning around) Don't fucking talk to me.

WANDA: Right, yes, of course.

WILLEM: (cutting the tension)

Helina, where're the others?

HELINA: Gert and Pav are making sure everyone else is okay and that we've got a way outta here in case we need it.

WANDA: And what brings us over here, instead?

HELINA: My babies -- they may not be living, breathing Proximans, but they're sure as fuck what's keeping the rest of us that way.

WANDA: There are children on the other side?!

WILLEM: It's a greenhouse. It's where we grow our food and medicine.

ROOT: (clearing throat) I'm afraid I'm lost. Shouldn't we be with the others, looking for a way out instead of… (gulps) a way through?

WANDA: I'll start over here.

[SFX: Wanda begins to step toward the rubble, but Helina pushes her back.]

HELINA: Neither of you touches a thing. I built this greenhouse- I don't need your help with anything-

WILLEM: Please, my friend. I know that you have no love lost for her majesty--

HELINA: You're damn right I don't.

WILLEM: But she genuinely wants to help, and you need it, you need all the help you can get right now- which is these two.

HELINA: Fine! If you want to help so fucking bad, get to it then.

WANDA: I really do, if you'll have me.

ROOT: I really don't, if we're tallying desires.

WANDA: Shut up and lift.

[SFX: Willem and Wanda begin to help Helina pull aside rocks.]

WILLEM: (grunting) Helina, you haven't seen Benny, have you?

HELINA: Benny is the last thing on my mind right now, Willem.

WILLEM: This is serious. I haven't seen him anywhere since before the explosion.

HELINA: I swear to… You. If he had anything to do with this, I'll kill him.

WANDA: I'm sure Dear Benjamin would never do anything to harm the people he loves.

WILLEM: I agree, and I'm getting worried about him...

HELINA: Well, then, you better both hope that I'm wrong.

[SFX: The three fall silent as somber music picks up the end of the scene.]

[SFX: Several sets of footsteps approach. chaos is still playing in the distant background.]

BENNY: (antsy)This is it.

MILA: Excellent. Mom, it's time to prove your usefulness. Which one is the elderweed.

LUZ: (gently) Do you truly remember nothing I've taught you?

MILA:  Add it to the long list of ways I've disappointed you.

LUZ: (deep sigh) Over there. Along the far wall.

MILA: You heard her, Cade. Let's get to work.

CADE: LET'S GO!

[SFX: Mila's crew gets started, pulling everything from the walls and loading them into cases.]

LUZ: (following behind, shouting) Tell them to be delicate. They won't be worth anything to anybody if you rip them to shreds!

CADE: (annoyed) They know what they're doing.

LUZ: I doubt that. Make sure not to lose too many leaves, and keep the roots in tact. You'll need to replant them as soon as possible.

MILA: Tell them to be careful, Cade. This is our one and only shot.

[SFX: The music vamps as the work continues. Eventually, the workers lug the crates away.]

MILA: Is that all of it?

CADE: Every last plant.

MILA: Good.

CADE: The boys are setting fires around the greenhouse now, as we discussed.

LUZ: Is that really necessary? You told me you'd be in and out- just needed the elderweed- (laughs bitterly) But, of course, I even said it earlier-

MILA: (seething) I'm just like Dad, remember? You've said it yourself a thousand times.

[SFX: Cade sets fire to the rest of the plants in the greenhouse, which sets off another alarm nearby.]

LUZ: Where did I go so wrong with you?

MILA: -I'm going to stop you right there, I have no interest in this narrative. That little girl is gone. Maybe it's time to take a little bit of personal responsibility and ask yourself why.

BENNY: Please, it's done. Just leave.

MILA: In a hurry to get back to your little friends, Ben? You think they're going to let you back in the club after you betrayed them like this? Once a rat always a rat. That's what they'll say.

BENNY: I was just trying to keep them safe.

MILA: Oh dear, that's actually kind of sweet. They're a pretty gullible bunch. Perhaps they would have taken you back, too.

[SFX: Mila pulls the trigger and a single shot takes Benny down. His body crumples to the ground. Luz screams.]

MILA: It's a shame we'll never find out.

[SFX: Benny, still alive, gurgles and gasps for air. A pause. Mila shoots again.]

MILA: I just knew he'd be hard to kill.

[SFX: Luz hyperventilates, trying to understand what she just witnessed.]

MILA: Anything else, Mom? … I thought so. Let's get the fuckout of here. It stinks.

[SFX: The music crescendos as the whole crew runs back out of the sewers.]

[SFX: Shaima is coughing while Argus weeps. Kendall and Cas show up at the door.]

CAS: Argus! Shaima? What the fuck happened?

[SFX: Cas runs to Shaima's side, applying pressure to his stomach, which he grunts at.]

ARGUS: (shocked) What... what have I done...?

KENDALL: (seeing Isaac) Isaac... What did you do?

ISAAC: It's not what it looks like, Argus was confused... thought he was a Wolf...

VIVIENNE: Kid was screaming, and Shaima tried to calm him down.

ARGUS: I did it... it was me. It was all me. It's always me, getting the people I love killed...

CAS: Somebody please just tell me what happened.

SHAIMA: (weak) We had a struggle, he... didn't recognize me, it was the uniform I think, but, he got my gun...

VIVIENNE: Save your breath hot stuff… We need to get him back to base. He's bleeding pretty bad-

ISAAC: -I agree. It's not safe for Argus here either, we should go.

KENDALL: We? Hell no. You stay here.

ISAAC: I go where he does.

CAS: Absolutely not. Argus, come on.

ARGUS: (serious) Not without him.

KENDALL: Argus, you don't understand what kind of man Isaac is.

ARGUS: And you do?

CAS: We don't have time for this. If Argus wants him to come, he comes.

KENDALL: But the council...

CAS: You let me deal with them.

VIVIENNE: It's settled then. Cas, Kendall, grab him under the armpits, mind the stomach, Shaima, we're getting you up now and it's gonna hurt like a bitch.

ARGUS: No, if anybody's helping carry him its me.

ISAAC: Are you sure that's a good idea? With your back in the shape it is?

ARGUS: (determined) I'm doing this.

[SFX: They hoist Shaima and he cries out in pain.]

SHAIMA: No, you all get home to Gert safe, leave me...

CAS: Fuck no. We've got you, we're all going home together.

SHAIMA: I'll only slow you down-

VIVIENNE: Shh..sweetie, you're cuter when you're quiet.

[SFX: As the group all starts for the door, Swift clears his throat.]

SWIFT: Woah, woah, wait a minute now. I let you have a peaceful moment, but I'm afraid they won't be going anywhere.

CAS: I'd love to see you try and stop me, Swift. You looking for a rematch?

SWIFT: (nervous) -you know what? I don't actually care what happens to them.

CAS: That's what I thought.

SWIFT: Do me a favor and rough me up a bit so it looks like I put up a fight-

ISAAC: -I'm on it.

[SFX: Isaac knocks Swift out cold with a punch to the jaw, and then a few kicks once he has him on the ground.]

KENDALL: (laughing a little) Yikes... Isaac, I think he's had enough. You got him, he's out.

CAS: Isaac, I wanna make one thing clear. You're coming with us because for some bizarre reason Argus wants you to. Do not test our patience.

ISAAC: I can press pause on our personal shit if she can.

KENDALL: I'm fine, thank you very much.

ISAAC: Good, because we've gotta get moving now. And fast.

CAS: What're you talking about?

ISAAC: Have you seen how empty it is around here? Where do you think they went?

KENDALL: No.

ARGUS: What's going on?

ISAAC: (ignoring Argus) Yes, and if we don't get there soon. I'm not sure what'll be left.

[SFX: Extremely depressing music ends the episode.]
